When the Mines Closed

The anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania, five hundred square miles of rugged hills stretching between Tower City coal region and Carbondale, harbored coal deposits that once heated virtually all the homes coal region and businesses in Eastern cities. At its peak during World War I, the coal industry here employed 170,000 miners, coal region and supported almost 1,000,000 people. Today, with coal workers numbering 1,500, only 5,000 people depend on the industry for their livelihood. Between these two points in time lies a story of industrial decline, of working people facing incremental coal region and cataclysmic changes in their world. When the Mines Closed tells this story in the words of men coal region and women who experienced these dramatic changes coal region and in more than eighty photographs of these individuals, their families, coal region and the larger community. Award-winning historian Thomas Dublin interviewed a cross-section of residents coal region and migrants from the region, who gave their own accounts of their work coal region and family lives before coal region and after the mines closed. Most of the narrators, six men coal region and seven women, came of age during the Great Depression coal region and entered area mines or, in the case of the women, garment factories, in their teens. They describe the difficult choices they faced, coal region and the long-standing ethnic, working-class values coal region and traditions they drew upon, when after World War II the mines began to shut down. Some left the region, others commuted to work at a distance, still others struggled to find employment locally. The photographs taken by George Harvan, a lifelong resident of the area coal region and the son of a Slovak-born coal miner, document residents' lives over the course of fifty years. Dublin's introductory essay offers a briefhistory of anthracite mining coal region and the region coal region and establishes a broader interpretive framework for the narratives coal region and photographs. In a West Texas town called Thurber the Texas Pacific Coal coal region and Oil Company grew rich digging coal, drilling oil coal region and making bricks from the clay soil. The Texas Pacific Company as it was known at its beginning, was born in 1888 just seventy-five miles west of Fort Worth. Employing mostly immigrant workers in the coal mines, the company prospered coal region and created a town eventually called Thurber. The company added a brick works in 1894. For several years Thurber rivaled Fort Worth as the largest population coal region and cultural center for the region. The discovery of the famous Ranger oil fields in 1917 by the company`s general manager, W. K. Gordon, began not only a whole new chapter in the development coal region and expansion of the company, but also in the growth of Texas. The company survived by both anticipating coal region and adapting to the changing economy until its eventual sale in 1963. The latter part of the book offers an insider`s look into the post-World War II development of Fort Worth, including the political maneuverings of the last chairman of the company, H. B. Fuqua. Through photographs, newspaper articles, company archives, coal region and oral recollections, the reader catches a glimpse of the life coal region and times of the people coal region and events that shaped the socioeconomic growth of the region from its beginnings, through wars, the Depression, coal region and post-war booms.
